Here at Outer Reef Surf Training Centre Of Excellence in Bali, We offer you a 4 week 8 week and 12 week surf Adventure Academy / ISA Surf Instructor course. We take you to instructor LEVEL 1 in1, 2 or 3 months with our 4, 8 or 12 week surf instructor teacher training camp. You will be based in Canggu, a really cool, chilled out, ‘surfy’ village on the west coast of Bali. You will stay in a private villa ( incl a lush garden & funky pool! ) with your other course mates. You will be out surfing and coached twice a day by our highly qualified ISA surf instructors. So even when you’re an intermediate or advanced surfer they will guide, develop and work with you towards a successfully passing of your ISA & SLSGB assessment. PEMBROKESHIRE INSTRUCTOR TRAINING
ISA LEVEL 1 SURF INSTRUCTOR COURSES
The ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Qualification is the basic Instructor accreditation and minimum requirement for professional instructors to hold. It covers the teaching of entry level and basic beginner surfers through to an early intermediate level. All level 1 Instructors must be a minimum age of 16 years old. Instructors under the age of 18 must work with a supervising instructor until they reach 18 years of age, at which time they are able to instruct on their own. The requirements for accreditation and gaining the ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor qualification are ▪ Attend the 2 Day ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course. SURF INSTRUCTOR COURSES ISA LEVEL 2
Theses courses are both suited for your first step in becoming a surfing instructor, instruct beginner level surfing lessons and activities. The level 2 course is for surf coaches that are working with intermediate to early advanced surfers and coaching surf skills progression and development. The course also touches on athlete development, sport psychology, and surf contest preparation. All ISA Surf Level 2 Coaches MUST have completed and passed an ISA Surf Level 1 Course prior to approval as a Surf Level 2 Coach.

Here at Outer Reef, we have been running surf lessons and professional development courses for over 25 years both in our home county of Pembrokeshire and worldwide.
We still love teaching the next generation of surfers, paddle boarders and beach lifeguards, whether it’s on a windswept beach in Wales, or on the beaches of France or Bali.
Our fearless leader, Dean, is a true waterman and has represented the GB in competitive surfing. He is a surf ambassador for UK/Europe, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, helping national governing bodies create a clear pathway for the sports development. With 25 years of experience in Surf, Sup and Lifesaving development to all ages and abilities, Dean is also very proud to work together with Disability Sport Wales, local community organisations, junior and secondary schools, National Trust and Pembrokeshire County Council, as well as global governing bodies.
We often employ people, especially locals, who have completed courses with us, so be sure to ask if you are looking for employment and we can let you know if we have any availability.

SURF INSTRUCTOR COURSE COST
COURSE FEES £300 - £350
There are no hidden costs you will have to keep up-to-date with your membership to the ISA, which is the international governing body.
The ISA Introduction to Surf Instructing E-Learning Course is now live on the ISA Source and available to complete at any time. As announced, the ISA Surf Level 1 Certification Pathway now requires all instructors to complete the course as a prerequisite to participating in the Surf Level 1 course. Course Fees is $50 after booking the ISA Level 1 with Oute Reef. Please read our FAQ's on E-Learning for more information.
Our Pembrokeshire courses will be held at our Activity Centre on Gupton Farm, Castlemartin, SA71 5HW.
Accommodation is not included in the cost of the course but we can recommend great value for money accommodation in the nearby area.
Food is not included, but there are local cafes nearby and a small supermarket about a 15minute drive away. If you do need to heat up your food, we do have a microwave available onsite and don’t worry there is a kettle available for unlimited tea and coffee.

This is specific to each of the different courses we offer, and more details can be found on each of our individual course pages. We do require you to be swim fit and a confident and competent swimmer.

ISA LEVEL 1 INTRODUCTION TO SURF INSTRUCTING E-LEARNING COURSE
Introduction: (for anyone booking an ISA Level 1 Course)
The ISA Introduction to Surf Instructing E-Learning Course is designed to introduce surfers to the knowledge and skills needed to deliver safe, quality learn-to-surf lessons for beginners and early intermediate level surfers. The course can be completed online at any time and is the first step on the pathway to achieving an ISA Surf Level 1 Certification.
When you book the ISA Level 1 with Outer Reef you'll be sent an email containing a discount code for 50% off the course and instructions on how to register. You'll be responsible for registering and paying the E-Learning fee directly to the ISA. This will begin your surf instructor education journey through the ISA’s globally recognized Coaching and Instructing Program.
Fee: $50 after discount code is applied
This course is the first step to becoming an ISA Certified Instructor. Participants who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion upon finishing all eight modules. Finishing this course alone does not qualify the participant as an ISA Certified Instructor. After completing this course, participants must participate in an ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor Course with an ISA Course Presenter to become certified

The Surf Coaches will be assessed as competent :
- Venue analysis
- Lesson planning (group assessment)
- Delivering the planned lesson (deliver lesson segment)
- Demonstrate practical surfing skills
- Assess lesson delivery (self-assessment)
E.g. ‘Safety of Surfers in Your Care’ Module 2 the focus of the module is developing a venue analysis guide which requires the candidate to have an understanding of how to identify a ‘safe surfing venue’ and ‘duty of care obligations’. Surf and weather conditions although part of the safety aspects of selecting a venue can be briefly explained rather than a comprehensive approach.
Course delivery (day one continued)
9.30 am One of the key attributes a Surf coaching candidate needs to develop is the ability to communicate confidently to individuals or groups. A strategy to encourage the development of oral skills is to have each surf coach give a brief 2-3 minute talk relating to the listed headings.

Role of the Surf Coach
This module touches briefly on the qualities an effective coach requires, i.e. communication, organization, knowledge and importantly the role a coach can play in the community. Teaching basic surfing rules and environmental concerns is vital with overcrowding of some surfing breaks and the need to protect the eco-system of the beach and ocean environments.
Refer to the ‘Coach’s Code of Ethics’ Explain that the coach will need to understand and sign off as part of the accreditation process.
12.00 am Safety of the Surfer in your Care – Module 2
Surf coaches need to understand ‘Duty of Care’ obligations and surf lesson safety guidelines and how to identify a safe surfing venue. The course presenter can touch on weather conditions and marine creatures and focus on preparing candidates for the practical exercise in developing a quality venue analysis guide. Refer ‘Selecting a Safe Venue’ Give a brief preview of what the candidate can expect from the course presenter delivered ‘Learn to Surf’ lesson.

Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the world governing authority for the sport of surfing, the ISA Surf Coaching & Instructing Educational Program is the international standard for accreditation of Coaches and Instructors in the surf school industry.
The ISA Coaching & Instructing Program is designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities of those individuals who wish to obtain a scientific approach to the Coaching and Instructing of surfing.
The objectives of the ISA Coaching & Instructing Program:
- To establish an international system of Coaching and Instructing Courses, improving the safety and efficacy of surf instruction around the world.
- To further develop, through educational programs, a body of knowledge on which Coaches and Instructors may draw.
- To provide Coaches and Instructors with employment opportunities, encouragement, and support.
- To advance surf Coaching and Instructing as a globally standardized and highly professional activity with stringent requirements.
Over time this program will expand to many other areas of professional development education for our great sport of surfing. All ISA Coaches and Instructors must abide by the local laws and regulations of the area in which they work. All ISA Instructors must be a minimum of 16 years of age to become an accredited ISA Instructor but must work under the supervision of an ISA Instructor over 18 years of age. An ISA Instructor must be a minimum of 18 years of age to instruct without supervision.

COURSE OPTIONS
Level One Surf Instructor
This level one course is the cutting industry standard for surf Instructors at quality surf schools around the world. This course has the broadest international appeal.
Level Two Surf Instructor
This level two course is for elite contest preparation. All level two Coaches MUST have completed and passed an ISA level one Surf Instructor course prior to approval as a level two Surf Coach.
Flat Water SUP Stand Alone
The ISA’s newest course, this certification is designed for Flat Water SUP Stand Alone in lakes, bays, lagoons and all flat water settings.
